The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) is a non-profit foundation established by the Federal Republic of Germany for the promotion of international research cooperation. It enables highly qualified scholars not resident in Germany to spend extended periods of research in Germany and promotes the ensuing academic contacts.
The Georg Forster Research Fellowshipsenable highly qualified researchers from developing countries to carry out a research project of relevance to development policy which, being undertaken in Germany, is particularly targeted to transferring knowledge and technologies to developing countries.
- for postdoctoral researchers: 6 to 24 months, plus subsequent return fellowship lasting 12 months.
- for experienced researchers: 6 to 18 months. The fellowship is flexible and can be divided up into a maximum of three blocks within three years.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is the central, self-governing research funding organization that promotes research at universities and other publicly financed research institutions in Germany. The DFG serves all branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating cooperation among researchers.
In cooperation with the German Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development the DFG supports the distribution of German research results abroad by assisting foreign academic institutions in the acquisition of German publications.
Under this scheme applications are accepted for monographs, serials, handbooks and CD-ROMS (from any subject or discipline) by authors from Germany either in German or in available translations. Academic institutions from developing countries may also apply for monographs which are produced by foreign publishers.
InWEnt – Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung (Capacity Building International, Germany) gGmbH is synonymous with human resources and organisational development in international cooperation. Its education, exchange and dialogue programmes that offer places for about 55,000 individuals every year make InWEnt a very large-scale joint undertaking of the German Federal Government, the federal state (Länder) governments and industry. The courses offered by InWEnt address specialists, executives and decision-makers in industry, politics, administration and civil society. InWEnt works with partners in developing countries, transition states and industrialised nations.
The Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD) is the scholarship institution of the German Catholic Church for post-graduate students and scientists from developing countries. The KAAD supports his scholars in form of scholarships and educational programs and offers spiritual and personal assistance in view of future multiplying functions students will have in their home countries. This is based on cooperation with partner committees and associations of ex-scholars in those countries and it aims at setting up (scientific) networks and at contributing to a holistic development, which includes the religious and inter-religious dimensions.
Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) is a German Political Foundation. FES is closely associated with the social democratic political (SPD) camp in Germany. FES is a non-governmental, non-profit organization and largely public funded. Both at home in Germany and in over 100 countries world-wide, FES strives to promote political participation, social justice and international understanding.
The Hanns Seidel Foundation describes its work and mission with the motto "in the service of democracy, peace and development". This equally applies to Bavaria, Germany, Europe and all around the globe. The Hanns Seidel Foundation practices political education with the aim of supporting the "democratic and civic education of the German people with a Christian basis".

The Heinrich Boell Foundation, affiliated with the Green Party of Germany, is a legally independent political foundation working in the spirit of intellectual openness. The Foundation's primary objective is to support political education both within Germany and abroad, thus promoting democratic involvement, socio-political activism, and cross-cultural understanding. The Foundation also provides support for art and culture, science and research, and developmental co-operation. Its activities are guided by the fundamental political values of ecology, democracy, solidarity, and non-violence.
