Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Scientists and Academics

Research grants to run for more than 6 months (full grant scholarship):

  • Application deadline: 30 September each year.
  • Requirement: Excellent Master's degree, completed less than six years ago
  • Field research in the home country is possible for up to 12 months.
  • The grants are open to all academic disciplines.
  • German language skills are not expected.
  • The DAAD will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, a monthly stipend and a health insurance cover.
  • There will be no money for research work.


Grants in accordance with the DAAD Sandwich Model

  • Application deadline: 30 September each year
  • Requirement: Excellent Master's degree, completed less than six years ago
  • There will be no money for research work.
  • Only 2 phases of field research (of altogether 12 months) in your home country or “third country” are possible.
  • Residence in Germany is subject to a time limit of 24 months.
  • The Doctorate degree has to be gained in the home country.
  • German language skills are not expected.
  • For the stay in Germany, the DAAD will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, a monthly stipend and a health insurance cover.


Research grants to run up to 6 months

  • Requirement: Excellent Master's or PhD degree, completed less than six years ago
  • The DAAD will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, a monthly stipend and a health insurance cover.
  • German language skills are not expected.

To do research in Germany, applicants need the confirmation/ invitation of a German supervisor based at a university or research institute. It often proves difficult to find such a research contact. Therefore, it is advisable to start the search as early as possible!

Applications:

  • Kenyans may only submit their documents to the DAAD, Regional Office for Africa, Nairobi.
  • Non-Kenyan citizens please apply through the relevant diplomatic and consular missions of the Federal Republic of Germany in their respective home countries.
  • A direct application to DAAD Head Office in Germany is not possible.
