About Us

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organisation supporting the international exchange of students and scholars. Since it was founded in 1925, more than 1.5 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. It is a registered association of more than 230 German universities and over 120 student bodies.

DAAD awards grants and scholarships. Moreover, DAAD supports the internationalisation of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, and assists universities in developing countries. Its funding comes primarily from the German Federal Foreign Office and other German federal ministries. The European Union, private enterprises, and foreign governments contribute an ever increasing share. Its Regional Office for Africa is responsible for Pan African Initiatives and Co-operation with Universities in the wider Eastern Africa region.
