The DAAD offers the following opportunities for Germans going to Africa:
Short Term Lectureship
Objectives of the Programme
Academic teaching staff posted at a German University can be sponsored by DAAD to teach abroad for a period of a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 6 months.
The Host University in Africa can invite a German University Lecturer to take over teaching duties within the standard programmes or offer special compact courses for postgraduate students and members of academic staff. He/she should teach for a minimum of eight hours per week.
Procedures
The host University is expected to extend an invitation letter to the teacher. This must be accompanied by a detailed job description form which is available from the DAAD Regional Office in Nairobi or from the head office in Bonn.
An application must be made at least two months ahead of the next sitting of the selection committee. The selection committee sits only five times a year in Bonn, so it is important to plan well ahead.
The host university is expected to contribute to the programme, either in the form of a local salary, honorarium, accommodation or comparable benefits for the application to be successful.
Terms of support for the guest lecturer
If the application is successful, DAAD will cover travel expenses and will pay a supplement to the living expenses of the German guest lecturer.

Long Term Lectureship
Objectives of the programme
DAAD can assist foreign universities in the recruitment and placement of German Academic teaching staff and fund long term teaching assignments. This refers in particular to universities in Africa, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the CIS.
DAAD long term lecturers are supposed to teach about 12 hours per week, preferably in postgraduate programmes and to take over additional duties related to staff development such as supervision on Master and PhD thesis work, joint research papers etc.
The duration of a long-term assignment is at least six months and can be extended up to 5 years.
Procedures
The University informs DAAD of a particular staff position for which a German University teacher is required and submits a job description with the terms of reference (forms are available from German Embassies and the Regional Office in Nairobi.) If the request fits into the DAAD programme policy and budget, DAAD identifies suitable candidates.
A committee of German university professors interviews the candidates and selects the one who best meets the universities specific requirements. Then, the application documents are submitted to the requesting university for final decision.
Terms of support for the guest professor
If the local university accepts the candidate, it offers him/her an employment contract with regular local salary and benefits DAAD pays a topping up to the local salary. If the university is not in a position to cover international travel expenses, DAAD will provide for such.

This programme aims to enable universities in developing countries to specifically engage the services of German academics as advisers on how to implement clearly-defined reform measures and projects which contribute to the structure-building process at the partner university.
These German academics will provide the university, faculty or departmental management bodies, and possibly also individual university administrators, with support as advisers in the following areas:
Advise on improving administrative procedures at the partner university.
Advise on initiating cooperation with the commercial sector and with the local authorities to raise the university's ability to provide services and build networks.
Advise on networking projects at the partner universities with German development cooperation activities.
Creation of expertise and technology transfer centres at the partner universities.
Conceptional advice on organising research projects and, in particular, on defining research lines, research funding and the evaluation of research findings as well as in international networking.
Didactic and conceptional advice on raising the quality of teaching represents a multi-functional task to be shared by all areas.
The advice may take the form of training sessions for university administrators involved in planning and steering the university's teaching, research, services or general administration activities. However, “on the job training” or cooperation in small projects or workshops may also be suitable for this target group.
Procedures
Over a period of two calendar years, DAAD can fund up to a maximum of four assignments at a partner university by any one German academic or expert. Each assignment can last between a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of three months.
Travel expenses for German advisers.
Subsistence expenses for German advisers.
Material costs for small equipment and materials (once in two years) to remain in the target country.
Since networking between partners and third parties is seen as a key component of the programme, short stays in Germany and, in justified exceptions, stays in a third country by up to three staff members from the partner university may be subsidised through grants.
Applications are submitted by a German academic (postdoc, university lecturer or emeritus professor) or by a senior university management staff member.
Applicants must be able to prove that they have the requisite teaching, research or university management expertise as well as experience in development cooperation.
The initiative "Johann Gottfried Herder" is a cooperation between DAAD, the non-profit Hertie Foundation, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.
Its mandate is to support and facilitate the deployment of retired German university professors to universities all over the world. The initiative targets retired German university professors of all fields; in exceptional cases, retired leaders from the private sector or administration, who are interested in a long-term lectureship (at least one semester) at a host university, can also be considered.
Emphasis is put on projects which are carried out by or in cooperation with German universities abroad.
The application deadline for the Summer Semester 2010 is October 15, 2009, at
